Introduction — A Truth That Was Buried
There is a chapter in Indian history that was never taught in schools.
It was never discussed in universities. It was never featured in mainstream historical documentaries. It was never included in the syllabus that generations of Indian children studied year after year.
That chapter belongs to the Sanatan Vaishnav Bairagi Warriors.
These were not ordinary ascetics. These were warrior saints who held a rosary in one hand and a sword in the other. They fought. They bled. They built kingdoms. They defeated armies. They protected temples when no one else would stand up to defend them.
And then history forgot them. Not accidentally. Deliberately.
This article is the story of that forgotten history — and the retired Indian Army officer who dedicated his life to bringing it back.
The Beginning — 5122 Years of an Unbroken Tradition
The Sanatan Vaishnav Bairagi tradition did not begin in the medieval period. It did not begin during the Mughal era. It did not begin with any modern religious movement.
It began 5122 years ago.
Jagadguru Nimbarkacharya — the founder and supreme acharya of the Nimbark Sampraday — lived in 3096 BC. He established the philosophical and spiritual foundation of the Vaishnav Bairagi tradition at a time when most civilizations of the world were still in their earliest stages of development.
The Nimbark Sampraday is one of the four principal Vaishnav traditions of India. It is rooted in the devotion to Radha and Krishna and represents one of the oldest continuous philosophical and spiritual traditions in human history.
From this ancient foundation, the Sanatan Vaishnav Bairagi tradition grew over millennia — producing philosophers, poets, warriors and kings who shaped the history of the Indian subcontinent in ways that mainstream historiography has almost entirely ignored.
Who Were the Sanatan Vaishnav Bairagi Warriors?
Most people in India today think of Vaishnav Bairagis as simple ascetics — wandering saints who renounced the world, chanted the names of Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna, and lived in forest hermitages or temple complexes.
That image is incomplete. Dangerously incomplete.
Because history — the real history, documented in manuscripts, farmans, colonial records and local chronicles — tells a completely different story.
The Sanatan Vaishnav Bairagis were not just spiritual warriors. They were armed warriors. They were kings. They were commanders. They were the last line of defence when the armies of Mughal emperors marched toward Hindu temples to destroy them.
Consider these facts that are almost unknown today:
Vaishnav Bairagi Kings once ruled Delhi itself. At a time when most people believe Delhi was entirely under Mughal control, Bairagi rulers held significant political and military power in the region.
The kingdoms of Chhuikhadan and Rajnandgaon were ruled by Vaishnav Bairagi kings for generations. These were not small principalities — they were organized kingdoms with armies, administrations and royal courts.
Veer Banda Bairagi — one of the most ferocious military commanders in Indian history — was a Vaishnav ascetic. He was initiated into the Vaishnav tradition before he became the military successor of Guru Gobind Singh and led an armed revolution that brought the Mughal empire in Punjab to its knees.
The Bairagi armies participated in major battles across northern and central India, defending temples, protecting pilgrimage routes and maintaining the cultural fabric of Sanatan Dharma during the darkest centuries of foreign invasion and occupation.
These are not minor footnotes in Indian history. These are central chapters that were torn out.
