Nimbarkacharya Dham Salemabad (Ajmer, Rajasthan): History and Spiritual Legacy of the Nimbarka Sampradaya
India has been the cradle of numerous spiritual traditions that have shaped the philosophy and devotional practices of Hindu civilisation for thousands of years. Among these traditions, the Vaishnava Sampradayas occupy a particularly significant place. These traditions are centred on the worship of Lord Vishnu and his divine incarnations, and they have inspired millions of devotees through their teachings of devotion, philosophy, and spiritual discipline.
Within the broader Vaishnava tradition of Sanatan Dharma, four principal sampradayas are traditionally recognised:
• Sri Sampradaya founded by Ramanujacharya
• Brahma Sampradaya founded by Madhvacharya
• Rudra Sampradaya associated with Vishnuswami and later Vallabhacharya
• Kumara Sampradaya founded by Nimbarkacharya
Among these four ancient Vaishnava traditions, the Nimbarka Sampradaya holds a unique and deeply respected position. Its principal spiritual seat today is located at Nimbarkacharya Dham in Salemabad, near Ajmer in the Indian state of Rajasthan.
The Divine Life and Philosophy of Nimbarkacharya
The Nimbarka Sampradaya traces its origin to the great philosopher and saint Jagadguru Nimbarkacharya, one of the most influential teachers of the Vaishnava Vedantic tradition.
According to traditional belief, Nimbarkacharya is regarded as an incarnation of the Sudarshana Chakra, the divine discus of Lord Vishnu. Through his spiritual insight and deep understanding of the Vedic scriptures, he presented a distinctive philosophical system known as Dvaitadvaita Vedanta.
This philosophy teaches a profound balance between dualism and non-dualism. According to Nimbarkacharya:
• The individual soul (Jiva) is different from God.
• Yet at the same time, the soul is also a part of the Divine.
This relationship is often compared to the relationship between the sun and its rays. The rays originate from the sun and are inseparable from it, yet they are also distinct in their individual existence.
Through this philosophical approach, Nimbarkacharya established a devotional path centred on loving devotion to Radha and Krishna.
Guru Harivyas Devacharya and the Expansion of the Tradition
In the long lineage of spiritual teachers within the Nimbarka Sampradaya, Jagadguru Harivyas Devacharya occupies an extremely important place.
He was a renowned saint, scholar, and preacher of the Nimbarka philosophy. His spiritual leadership played a crucial role in strengthening the Radha-Krishna devotional tradition and spreading the teachings of the sampradaya across northern India.
Among his most prominent disciples was Jagadguru Parashuram Devacharya, who later established the central seat of the Nimbarka Sampradaya in Rajasthan.
Establishment of the Nimbarkacharya Seat at Salemabad
During the 15th–16th century, the 36th Acharya of the Nimbarka lineage, Jagadguru Parashuram Devacharya Maharaj, established the principal seat of the sampradaya at Salemabad, near Ajmer in Rajasthan.
At that time the region was largely covered by dense forests and sparsely populated. Through the dedication of saints and the support of devotees, the place gradually developed into a major spiritual centre.
Historical traditions state that local rulers of the period granted nearly 6000 bighas of land to the Nimbarka seat. This generous endowment allowed the development of temples, monasteries, and religious institutions that supported the growth of the sampradaya.
During his lifetime, Parashuram Devacharya also established more than fifty-two temples across different regions, including:
• Punjab
• Haryana
• The sacred Braj region
Through these efforts, the teachings of the Nimbarka Sampradaya spread widely across northern India.
Shri Sarveshwar Prabhu – The Sacred Shaligram Deity
The principal deity of the Nimbarkacharya Peeth at Salemabad is Shri Sarveshwar Prabhu, worshipped in the sacred form of a Shaligram Shila.
According to tradition, this Shaligram was originally given to Nimbarkacharya by the divine sage Devarshi Narada. Because of this sacred origin, it is considered one of the most revered and spiritually powerful deities within the Nimbarka tradition.
The worship of Shri Sarveshwar represents the eternal presence of Lord Vishnu and symbolises the spiritual continuity of the sampradaya.
The Devotional Tradition of Radha-Madhava Worship
A defining feature of the Nimbarka Sampradaya is the joint worship of Radha and Krishna.
In this tradition, Shri Radha is not merely regarded as a devotee of Krishna but as the supreme embodiment of divine love and spiritual energy. She represents the internal spiritual power (Hladini Shakti) of Lord Krishna.
For this reason, the worship of Radha-Madhava holds a central place in the devotional practices of the sampradaya. At Salemabad, devotees engage in continuous worship, kirtan, and spiritual celebrations dedicated to the divine couple.
The Present Acharya of the Nimbarka Sampradaya
Today, the principal seat of the Nimbarka Sampradaya continues to remain at Salemabad in Rajasthan.
The spiritual leadership of the tradition is presently held by the 49th Acharya, Jagadguru Shri Shyam Sharan Devacharya Maharaj, who guides the sampradaya and preserves its centuries-old spiritual heritage.
Under his guidance, the Nimbarka Peeth continues to serve as a centre for devotional practice, scriptural learning, and the preservation of Vaishnava traditions.
Spiritual Significance of Salemabad
Over the centuries, Salemabad has evolved into one of the most important pilgrimage centres associated with the Nimbarka Sampradaya. Devotees and scholars from across India and from different parts of the world visit this sacred place to experience its spiritual atmosphere and to study the philosophical teachings of the tradition.
The site represents not only a historical institution but also a living spiritual heritage that continues to inspire devotion to Radha and Krishna.
Indian spiritual history and traditions are also deeply connected with the great epic Mahabharata.
The life of Karna in the Mahabharata is one of the most inspiring and tragic stories in Indian history.
