History of Nimbarkacharya Dham: The Story Behind the Name Salemabad
Near the historic city of Ajmer in the Indian state of Rajasthan lies one of the most important spiritual centers of the Nimbark tradition—Nimbarkacharya Dham.
Today this sacred place is widely known by that name, but historically it was known for many centuries as Salemabad.
Origin of the Name Salemabad
According to traditional accounts, the foundation of the Nimbark Peeth at this location was established by the revered saint Parshuram Devacharya.
During that period, northern India was ruled by the powerful Afghan emperor Sher Shah Suri.
A popular historical tradition narrates that Sher Shah Suri once visited the saint Parshuram Devacharya seeking blessings for a son.
After receiving the saint’s blessings, he was eventually blessed with a son.
The child was named Salim Shah Suri.
According to local tradition, the settlement that developed around the Nimbark Peeth gradually came to be known as Salemabad, named in honor of Salim Shah.
Royal Patronage and Land Grant
Historical traditions also mention that the rulers of that time granted land to the Nimbark Peeth for religious and spiritual activities.
It is believed that nearly 6000 bighas of land were donated for the development of temples, ashrams, cow shelters, and spiritual institutions.
Over time, these institutions transformed Salemabad into an important pilgrimage center for followers of the Nimbark tradition and devotees of Radha-Krishna.
Recognition as Nimbarkacharya Dham
As centuries passed, Salemabad became the most prominent spiritual seat of the Nimbark Sampradaya, a Vaishnava tradition established by Nimbarkacharya.
In modern times, recognizing the spiritual and historical importance of this sacred site, the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi referred to the place with the honored name “Nimbarkacharya Dham.”
Today, the sacred town is widely known around the world as Nimbarkacharya Dham (Salemabad).
Spiritual Importance Today
Today Nimbarkacharya Dham is not only a pilgrimage destination but also a major center for:
Vaishnava philosophy and spiritual education
The devotional tradition of Radha-Krishna bhakti
Preservation of ancient Hindu spiritual heritage
Cultural and religious activities of the Nimbark Sampradaya
From this historic seat, the teachings of the Nimbark tradition continue to spread across India and to spiritual communities around the world.
